Plenty of Info - Text only: no pics. I was quite taken aback to find this book has no illustations- which is probably because I didn't pay proper attention when ordering... That said, it makes a very positive change to have hold of a gardening book that seeks to be read rather than just admired for the glossy pictures. Informatiive and easy to follow .
Incredibly useful and well-written Don't let this book's small size and lack of pictures put you off - it is absolutely packed with useful information, written in a concise yet enthusiastic fashion. This guy knows his stuff! I own several books on wildlife gardening, all of them large and full of lovely glossy pictures but I feel like I have learnt a great deal more from this one and it is the one book I flick through again and again, absorbing all the author's snippets of wisdom before I head out into the garden or off to my local garden centre. I wish a copy of this book could be given out to every garden-owner in the UK!!
Absolutely essential A must have for everybody going to create a wildlife garden. After having read John's MEADOWLAND I knew I would have to buy all his books on nature. And this new one assured me that I have been right. Everything you have to know is so concentrated, so well written to the point. No photographs, no pictures, nearly no drawings, absolutely no paraphernalia, but the most important things and the really working ones are presented in the clearest and straightest way imaginable. This is a man who knows what he has to tell, with an unmatched knowledge got out of really DOING it, real work, a lifetime's experience. But watch out, every sentence, every word is of importance. This is a distillate of knowledge, so extremely focused, that you probably will be able to estimate it's full virtue only if having read some minor publications before. Look at all those - admittedly sometimes stunning - photographs, lukewarm and shallow instructions in some other books on this topic, and then come back to John's top-class writing. If there is something out there able to rival it, have a look at Jenny Steel's books! She too tells you only the really working things, drawing from a lifetime's experience in the same way. To tell the truth: I am desperate to see this book lavishly illustrated by adequate photographs and drawings. I would pay any price for such an unmatchable book.
Slim volume packed with useful information Unlike many gardening books, this slim volume doesn't come laden with glossy photographs (there aren't photos at all). However, the lack of photos is more than made up for by the advice and information it contains. The author covers all the main elements of a garden that can be used to encourage wildlife - from trees to ponds/damp areas, woodland areas to fences, borders to rockeries. There is advice on establishing a pond, instructions on how to create bird boxes & nest sites, and plenty of tips on maintenance and what to watch for. There is lots of information about the wildlife you might attract, and providing suitable habitats for them in the garden. If you are really interested in creating a wildlife-friendly garden, then this book should be your starting point. By way of example, if you are looking to develop a bee border, there is a comprehensive list of plants provided, given season by season so that you can select plants to offer a long period of interest and attraction to bees. You'll also find information about designing borders with butterflies and birds in mind. The one weaker spot is, I think, the section on pond planting where some of the suggestions have a tendency towards thuggishness and the unwary might find be led astray.
I highly recommend this book I highly recommend this book. It's an absolute must for anyone interested in wildlife gardening. It's just brilliant, I wish I had read it sooner. Along with other publications on the topic that I've been reading recently, it changed my attitude to gardening. I've always loved wildlife but now I know how much more I can do to help it. This little book is so informative, comprehensive, practical and enthusing. Besides, the author has a great sense of humour. I laughed out loud a few times while reading. I'd love to see an illustrated version of this book in the future. I've read it once but will certainly read it again as it has so much useful information.
