The Perfectionism Workbook: Practical Skills to Help You Let Go of Self-Criticism, Find Balance, and Reclaim Your Self-Worth

If you feel an intense pressure to be perfect, this evidence-based workbook offers real strategies based in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you develop a more balanced and healthy perspective. Do you hold yourself-and perhaps others-to extremely high standards? Do you procrastinate certain tasks because you're afraid you won't carry them out perfectly? If you've answered "yes" to one or both of these questions, chances are you're a perfectionist. And while there's nothing wrong with hard work and high standards, perfectionism can also take over your life if you let it. So, how can you find balance? With this workbook, you'll identify the causes of your perfectionism and the ways it is negatively impacting your life. Rather than measuring your self-worth by productivity and accomplishments, you'll learn to exercise self compassion, and extend that compassion to others. You'll also learn ways to prioritize the things that really matter to you, without focusing on attaining fixed goals. Life isn't perfect, and neither are we. If you're ready to break free from out-of-control perfectionism and start living a richer, fuller life, this workbook will help you get started.

Very disappointed And so i paid £11 for a new book, well that's what i thought. But it's not new at all. Not only that it's used but half of it already filled in as it is a book in workbook format. No information whatsoever before buying that it's used. Great to read about you and how you feeling as a perfectionist, but that i find very doubtful, thanks for not leaving any space to write my own answers and thoughts.
Great book but... The content is excellent, however I paid full price for a new book but received a damaged, sticky, and stain-covered book.
An Amazing Resource For Those Who Struggle With Perfectionism There are a lot of people out there who struggle with perfectionism or fear of failure at some point in time - myself included. So when my friend and colleague Sharon Martin, LCSW sent me her book, of course I couldn't wait for the opportunity to read it and snapped it up quickly. Although I was originally sent a copy of the book from the publisher for review, I will tell you that I have had a hard time keeping a copy due to utilizing it as a resource for my clients. So, I have ordered more copies, including a Kindle. Here is a breakdown of my review: Pros: 1) Pricing was efficient. I ordered multiple copies, so it was good that the book didn't drain my purse. 2) Easy to read, mostly laymen's terms. I would say the max is a 5th grade reading level. 3) I appreciate the disclaimers given in the front of the book about what people should do if negative/overwhelming feelings come up and how this book can be used as an extension of work with a therapist. 4) The definition of perfectionism, as well as the different types of perfectionism were easy to understand and the examples used to further clarify perfectionism were great, and I think most people who struggle with perfectionism have an "aha moment" as they identify themselves. 5) The self-assessment tool to further clarify fears and struggles was also great, because people can identify what exactly their struggles are with perfectionism. 6) Exercises and homework were easy, relevent, and can be done in a timely manner. 7) Other problem areas around perfectionism were identified such as busyness, fear, procrastination, etc were also identified and the book also explained how these self-sabotaging behaviors deepened perfectionist behaviors. 8) One of the things that I liked most about the book were tips and suggestions on self-care and self-compassion. One of the biggest complaints that I hear from people are that they don't know how to take care of or be kind to themselves. I think the breakdown of ways to care for and love ourselves is a gem within itself. Cons: 1) I wish there were a CD or some type of online tool where sheets could be printed out. It's helpful to go over this with clients in sessions. 2) This book should be spiral-bound or lie flat. It's easier to write in workbook that isn't trying to close. Bottom Line: This book is an excellent resource for those looking to work through and conquer their issues with perfectionism. I would highly recommend it. It speaks in lay-person terms, and is a helpful resource for anyone trying to overcome and manage perfectionism. Disclaimer please do not expect your working through this book to cure your perfectionism. It is not a cure, but rather 1 tool that can be used to help you manage it. As a last note to this review: I am really proud of Sharon Martin, LCSW. This book is a huge accomplishment and one that I would stand by and recommend time and againas it speaks to so many of our painpoints of wanting to be perfect and be validated by others - for whatever reason. Thank you so much for this wonderful gift as you have let people know, that they can and should be perfectly happy being imperfect and validating and loving themselves.
This book is incredibly powerful and grabbed me from the start! I absolutely LOVED this book. I knew I had some tendencies towards perfectionism but this book explains in detail the signs and symptoms that I would have missed otherwise. It's such a gentle approach that I help me to understand myself in a deeper way. I instantly related to the personal examples and found the exercises very easy and though provoking. As a therapist, I have already recommended this book to several clients ( and friends ) for those struggling with high expectations and people pleasing behaviors. This is a must read for anyone seeking positive change from issues like low self-esteem, perfectionism, difficulty letting go, self-forgiveness, adult children of alcoholic issues and codependency. Such a wonderful contribution to our field! Thank you Sharon!
A really helpful and easy to use guidebook! This is a wonderful book in workbook format. I found it to be very well written, and most importantly, accessible to the average person. You don't have to be a professional to understand it, although it is based on up-to-date research and the author's many years of experience as a psychotherapist. It is well organized and each chapter, with exercises, flows smoothly into the next. It gently expands your ideas about perfectionism and offers real-life examples that anyone can relate to. I'm just halfway through, but am excited to keep going. I feel grateful to Sharon Martin for giving us this resource!
