Just one darn thing after another..... I've been meaning to read this for a while since we've had it on the shelves almost since publication. Ah... the benefits of lockdown! I'm a bit confused, to be honest. The cover is a rather cartoon like illustration of a ritual in a forest which gives the impression it's suitable for younger children, but I don't think it is. Centred around the story of Moll Pecksniff, a gipsy girl who's a bit of an outsider who gradually finds out why, it's a little too scary for younger children and yet a little to childish for older middle grade readers. What struck me more than anything was the structure of the story: each chapter seems to end with yet another blow for Moll and after a while it becomes monotonous - hence the title of my review. It has some nice touches, but approach with caution.
"Miss, is there a book that will scare me from the very beginning?" One of the shortlisted books in the Hooked on Books category of the Coventry Inspiration Book Awards 2017, it’s by far the scariest adventure in the pile, but then I still watch Dr Who with a cushion just in case the Cybermen show up. Moll Pecksniff finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into the forest by her recurring nightmare, filled with drums and rattles. Little does she know, the Dreamsnatcher is calling her and his reasons are as sinister as they come. As Moll is finally told the truth behind how she came to live in the Ancient Wood with Oak, Mooshie and the other gypsies, she finds herself in grave danger. She must summon all of her courage if she is to defeat the Dreamsnatch. With her wildcat, Gryff, and her friend, Alfie, she seeks out the meanings of the bone readings and sets out to ensure the Bone Murmur isn't destroyed… From the gruesome opening, to the nail-biting ending, this book had me on the edge on my seat. Moll’s feisty, outspoken character springs to life off the page, followed swiftly by the darkness that seeks to destroy her. An outstanding debut that I'm delighted is a series; I know exactly which pupil I'm going to lend it to first! Great for fans of Harry Potter, Michelle Harrison and Eva Ibbotson.
What a great name for an author! I have read many reviews of this book offering high praise and thought it was about time I read it too. I’m glad I did. dream The Dream Snatcher tells the story of an orphaned gypsy girl called Moll who lives among other gypsies in a mysterious forest. Skull, an evil witchdoctor in the camp across the river, wants Moll dead. She embarks on a quest to find lost talismans that can help her defeat Skull’s evil plans. As the tale moves, Moll finds out more and more about her lost parents. The writing is enchanting and the relationships Moll has with her best friend, Siddy, the dubious Alfie and her wild cat, Griff are well rounded and engaging. The imagery in the book(dark forest, ancient riddles, voodoo, etc) together with the fiery, determined and endearing nature of Moll, make this a wonderful book for children. At it’s heart it is a story about good against evil that children will love and understand. It might be a little scary at times for younger ones. Skull does want Moll dead and the forest can be a dangerous place and Skull is a truly menacing antagonist. But kids love that sort of thing too and I don’t think it’s overdone. The story has a fairy tale feel to it and an electric pace that just keeps the pages turning. I particularly liked the subliminal message that gypsies are the good guys. It’s about time that commonly held prejudices against travellers are excised from our psyche. Highly recommended.
Too dark for me My 8 year old son and I read this book after reading all of Abi's other works such as the Unmapped Chronicles and Sky Song. After enjoying those I was surprised to encounter how dark this book felt with regular occurrences of dark magic and some slightly disturbing ideas of the Witch Doctor's ways to be cruel to the children. For me, this book was too dark and a few times I found myself remarking that it felt gratuitously dark, too sinister at points for 8 year olds say. If you're in my shoes and loved her more recent books, I'd respectfully invite you to think twice about reading this Dreamsnatcher series. I'll be thinking twice about any of Abi's future works after having read this.
Well this has been a fantastic book - we've (and thats a 54 year old ... Well this has been a fantastic book - we've (and thats a 54 year old and a 12 year old) have loved every minute of it. Can't wait to continue with the Shadow Keeper. Abi Elphinstone definitely rates highly in our books.
