The Bluest of Blues: Anna Atkins and the First Book of Photograph

A gorgeous picture book biography of botanist and photographer Anna Atkins--the first person to ever publish a book of photography After losing her mother very early in life, Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was raised by her loving father. He gave her a scientific education, which was highly unusual for women and girls in the early 19th century. Fascinated with the plant life around her, Anna became a botanist. She recorded all her findings in detailed illustrations and engravings, until the invention of cyanotype photography in 1842. Anna used this new technology in order to catalogue plant specimens-a true marriage of science and art. In 1843, Anna published the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions with handwritten text and cyanotype photographs. It is considered the first book of photographs ever published. Weaving together histories of women, science, and art, The Bluest of Blues will inspire young readers to embark on their own journeys of discovery and creativity.

Such a great book. This is one of the best children's books we've ever seen. I bought it because I'm an amateur photographer and make Cyanotypes and I'm also a scientist. I wanted to teach my little daughter all about Ana Atkins, who was a scientt and a great early photographer. It's so much better than I even hoped it would be! My daughter loves it, and we've been reading it nearly every night!
Brilliant and beautiful book This is a really beautiful book with wonderful illustrations. It also tells the story of Anna Atkins and her botanical cyanotypes in a very engaging way. It would make a great gift, especially with a pack of 'sun print' paper to experiment with
Love it I work with cyanotype and this book is a beautiful reminder of the history surrounding Anna Atkins. Great for children and adults alike.
Wonderful Book Its a childrensbook, however i feel it addresses more an adult Readership. The text is demanding young readers. However I did enjoy this. Its a wonderful childernsbook for adults... it on my coffee table since i have it. and its one of the prefered book by guests.
Picture book better for older children Nice pictures and informative about the woman said to have created the first book of photographs. But as a picture book, it’s really wordy. Younger children might find it too long, but might be good for age 10+.
