THE NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER FROM THE MILLION-SELLING AUTHOR OF CAST IRON , COFFIN ROAD AND THE BLACKHOUSE WHATEVER HAPPENS Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own the Hebridean company Ranish Tweed. On a business trip to Paris to promote their luxury brand, Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair, and then looks on as he and his lover are killed by a car bomb. She returns home to Lewis, bereft. I'LL ALWAYS BE THERE FOR YOU Niamh begins to look back on her life with Ruairidh, desperate to identify anyone who may have held a grudge against him. The French police, meanwhile, have ruled out terrorism, and ruled in murder - and sent Detective Sylvie Braque to shadow their prime suspect: Niamh. I'LL KEEP YOU SAFE, NO MATTER WHAT As one woman works back through her memories, and the other moves forward with her investigation, the two draw ever closer to a deadly enemy with their own, murderous, designs. Read Peters Wonderful Back Catalogue First My favourite author with an incredible back collection of books - which come very high recommended. This Book gets off to a brilliant start (and middle) and if I had to review the book before I'd read the last chapter I'd have said this was worthy of 5 stars too but ultimately it's a little dissapointing. No plot spoilers from me.
A real disappointment I was really looking to the publication of this book, having enjoyed all Peter May's previous Hebridean books, but this was a real let down. The characters were one dimensional, the descriptions of the Lewis landscape long and tedious, and the plot implausible. By the end I skim-read the pages just to finish it. And when does anyone, not least a student, FLY from Edinburgh to Aberdeen? Very disappointing effort.
Not his best, not his worst As with his previous books, when Peter may writes about his characters' childhoods/teenage years, intermixing it with the present, he really engages me. And I love it when he's focused on the Scottish Islands. So there was plenty in this novel to attract me. I found the plotting reasonable, with plenty of question marks over characters' motives. But I thought the initial 'event' was a bit of a stretch; and one particular episode taking place in New York was just plain silly. As for the final denouement - well, it's not his best. So he's done better (Lewis trilogy, Entry Island, Coffin Road) & he's done worse (anything involving Enzo!). I hope he's back on form with the next one.
Brilliant If you love Lewis and Harris then I think you will feel at home with this book. I am an ardent fan of Peter May's Hebrides books and this one is in the same well written style of the previous ones. I don't think that he will surpass the brilliance of "Blackhouse", but this book makes a good read. As always there is a cast of great characters in a wonderful setting.
what a let down Really diappointed in this book - previously other Peter May stories have beenr really well written. but this was so disaappointing. The first 3 quarters of the book were fine - but the villain could be easily spotted - but it was the final chapter I feel so angry about - it seemed as if the author was desperate to finish the story off and get shot of it . The last chapter was badly written.
