How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the F.A. Cup (Penguin Modern Classics)

'One of the greatest football novels ever written and a comic masterpiece' DJ Taylor' DJ Taylor'But is this story believable? Ah, it all depends upon whether you want it to believe it.' J.L. Carr In their new all-buttercup-yellow-stripe, Steeple Sinderby Wanderers, who usually feel lucky when their pitch is above water-level, are England's most obscure team. This uncategorizable, surreal and extremely funny novel is the story of how they start the season by ravaging the Fenland League and end it by going all the way to Wembley. Told through unreliable recollection, florid local newspaper coverage and bizarre committee minutes, How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the F.A. Cup is both entertaining and moving. There will never be players again like Alex Slingsby, Sid 'the Shooting Star' Swift and the immortal milkman-turned-goalkeeper, Monkey Tonks.

The best novel about football: charming, funny and very literate. Everything about this book is delightful - I would recommend it even to those who know little about football!!
Brilliant One of J.L.Carr.s wittiest books. Great characterisations and in places screamingly funny. One of the best football books ever written and this about a non existent amateur fenland village side, who, by guile and cleaver management win the F.A.Cup
Rank outsiders to win? What would the chance of that be? A forgotten gem - especially if you are a fan of anything to do with "the beautiful game". Rather dated language, but worth it for all that, this tale of an amateur team who won the FA cup - and how they did it. (Not real, of course, but somehow once they get going, very believable). J L Carr is the author of A Month in the Country.
J.L. Carr was/is a comedic genius. J.L. Carr was/is a comedic genius of the highest order. This story, along with his other eccentrically fashioned fiction, is a must-read if you take your humour gently, but with bite. It's written as something that will give you a thoughtful smile in recollection days after you read the passage that first tickled you. BTW If you enjoy this, you must go on to The Harpole Report.
Association Football - as it used to be. Like stepping back in time to a mythical golden age not unlike that created by PG Wodehouse. Why had I never come across this book until now?
