24 YEARS A COWBOY & RANCHMAN I: Or, Desperate Fights with the Indians and Mexicans

Hale tells the story of his years as a cattle rancher and cowboy in unadorned, often humorously authentic language. Battles with Comanches and Mexicans, cattle raids, love affairs, and murders spice up the pages of this narrative of life in Texas and Mexico.

The book reads like the autobiography of a hybrid Lone Ranger This book is an 1800's lesson in spare the rod and spoil the child. The author can't write, and the reader can't put it down. Will Hale was born to a rich Texas daddy on a wide spread who thought to keep his only boy from growing up 'mean' by sending him off to fancy schools in St. Louis and New York. For college the father tutored his son in the Texas fort system gambling halls and New Orleans Bordellos. All the boy wanted was to grow up and 'kill Indians and Mexicans 'who thieved their ranch, and this he began doing it by the hundreds through the Indian War, Mexican War, and into the South during the Civil War. But he did it with flair, muttering eloquent prayers over their dead bodies from all of his school learning. He had a hard-on for girls from grade school after his dad told him to 'pin back your ears an' go at them flyin' which got him in all kinds of humorous trouble that usually ended in blood. The book reads like the autobiography of a hybrid Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, Jessie James and Billy the Kid, the latter of whom Hale had some words with. I've never wanted an author to die sooner by the arrow of an Indian, bullet of cowboy, strangled by a whore, or dry gulched by a bandido, but it would have made the book too short.
