One of the 20th century 'greats'
This is a good, straightforward biography of a conducting giant. There is a good balance between personal/social and more narrowly musical matters -- and their intersection. e.g., Mravinsky's family was among the Bolshevik's 'class enemies'; and he had considerable difficulty achieving deserved opportunitiies and recognition.
For reasons I can't fathom, the name of conductor Fritz Stiedry is misspelled throughout at Steidry. And in my copy, there is one page that is out of place!
